Tally Solutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today and announced its strategic partnership with the Atal Incubation Centre – Pondicherry Engineering College Foundation (AIC-PECF), a premier incubation center supported by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), Niti Aayog, Government of India. The key focus of the collaboration will be to drive entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth in India by providing critical mentorship, financial aid, and technological support to budding startups.

Under this partnership, AIC-PECF will focus on mentoring and guiding young entrepreneurs, particularly at the initial stages of their ventures, while Tally Solutions will provide technological and business support to help these enterprises scale and succeed in the later stages.

Tata Motors conducts groundbreaking ceremony of its new vehicle manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu

In a significant step towards promoting indigenous (“Make in India, For the World”) manufacturing, Tata Motors Group, India’s leading producer of commercial and passenger vehicles, today held the groundbreaking ceremony of its new, world-class production facility to manufacture cars and SUVs, at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. This manufacturing facility will produce next-gen vehicles for Tata Motors and JLR. The internationally benchmarked plant will cater to requirements of both Indian and international markets.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin and Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons & Tata Motors, in the presence of several eminent Ministers, public representatives, senior bureaucrats, government officials, and senior representatives of the Tata Group.

Speaking on the occasion, Thiru M.K. Stalin, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, said, “Tata Group is renowned for its contribution to nation building. It has a deep, historic relationship with Tamil Nadu with many of its manufacturing plants successfully operating in our state for the past several years. We welcome Tata Motors, an auto manufacturer of global scale, for setting up its newest manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet.”

This advanced, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility has the potential to create over 5,000 employment opportunities (direct and indirect) and contribute towards building future ready skills amongst the local communities in and around the plant. In addition, the plant will be guided by principles of sustainability and use 100% renewable energy for running operations.

Speaking on the occasion, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons said, “We are pleased to make Panapakkam as the home of our next generation of cars and SUVs, including electric and luxury vehicles. Tamil Nadu is a leading industrial state with progressive policies and an established automotive hub with qualified and talented workforce. Several Tata Group companies have been successfully operating from here. We now intend to build our advanced vehicle manufacturing plant here using cutting-edge manufacturing technology and world-class sustainability practices. Our endeavour will be to have a high share of women employees across levels, in line with our focus towards greater empowerment of women.”

Tata Motors Group intends to invest ~INR 9,000 crores in this greenfield manufacturing facility, which has been designed for an annual production capacity of over 250,000 vehicles. Production will begin in a phased manner and progressively increase to reach this capacity over the next 5-7 years.

350 Students Certified at Samsung Innovation Campus in Presence of CM Yogi Adityanath

Samsung India’s flagship CSR initiative, the ‘Samsung Innovation Campus,’ (SIC) has concluded its Coding & Programming, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) courses for 350 students in Gorakhpur at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University. The students were handed over certificates of completion by the Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath at a ceremony held at the University premises. This initiative reiterates the brand’s commitment to being a strong partner of the country and working alongside the government in its mission to skill India and power #DigitalIndia.

Senior Samsung executives and representatives from the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI), which collaborated in training and mentoring the students were also present during the occasion. A total of 350 students were awarded certificates across various future-tech domains, including 150 in Coding & Programming, 100 in Artificial Intelligence, 50 in Big Data, and 50 in Internet of Things (IoT).

Samsung will train 3500 students across India as part of this programme in 2024. At the conclusion of the 2024 programme top performers of Samsung Innovation Campus will be awarded a cash prize of INR 1 lakh and will have the chance to visit Samsung’s facilities in Delhi/NCR. During these visits, they will have the opportunity to engage with and receive mentorship from Samsung’s leadership team. Not just that, the national course toppers will also receive exciting Samsung products, including Samsung Galaxy Buds and Samsung Galaxy Smartwatches.

Samsung Innovation Campus offers in-depth training across four key technology areas — AI, IoT, Big Data, and Coding & Programming. Students gain hands-on experience through capstone projects and soft skills training aimed at boosting their employability. The AI course participants undergo 270 hours of theory training followed by 80 hours of project work, while those enrolled in IoT and Big Data courses receive 160 hours of theory training and complete 80 hours of project work. Participants in the Coding & Programming course complete 80 hours of training and take part in a hackathon.

The programme covers eight educational institutions across four states. In the northern region, training centres are established in Lucknow and Gorakhpur, besides two in Delhi NCR. In the southern region, which includes Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, training centres are located in Chennai and Sriperumbudur, in addition to two in Bengaluru.

During the programme, participants will continue to receive instructor-led blended classroom and online training. Youth enrolled for the programme will undergo classroom and online training and complete their hands-on capstone project work in their selected technology areas in AI, IoT, Big Data and Coding & Programming.

They will also be imparted soft skills training to enhance their employability. The participants are being mobilized through ESSCI’s training and education partners across India. The approach includes a combination of offline and online learning, immersive hackathons and capstone projects, as well as expert mentorship provided by Samsung employees.

During 2023, Samsung Innovation Campus successfully trained 3000 students in future-tech courses. Samsung’s involvement in this initiative underscores its commitment to nation building through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in India. It complements Samsung’s other CSR endeavours, including Samsung Solve for Tomorrow. Through these initiatives, Samsung aims to empower future leaders of India by providing them with the necessary education and skills to drive meaningful change.

MIT Hosts Faculty Development Programme on Quantum Technologies

Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) inaugurated Faculty Development Programme on Quantum Technologies, held from September 9-13, 2024. Competition Frameworks Should Prioritise Domestic Realities to Enhance India’s Economic Growth

The Dialogue hosted its 2^nd Annual International Conference on ‘Competition Law in the Digital Age: Contextualising Global Experiences’, to discuss the role of technology markets in national and global economies and the approach of competition law and policy towards them. The event was attended by eminent personalities from inter-governmental organisations, international scholars and domain experts.

The experts emphasised the need to test frameworks that prioritise domestic realities and are customised to India’s needs. Most highlighted the necessity of tailoring competition laws to reflect the unique economic, social, and technological contexts of individual countries.

Lazar Radic, Senior Scholar for Competition Policy at ICLE and Adjunct Professor of Law at IE Law School, said, “The Digital Markets Act (DMA) primarily focuses on business users and platforms, emphasising ‘fairness’. However, consumers and efficiencies are not part of the equation. While some may believe Europe’s approach will inevitably influence global standards, this isn’t always the case. Europe’s strategy, including its push for digital sovereignty, reflects a form of protectionism that diverges from traditional free market principles. Therefore, other countries with different priorities or free market inclinations need not adopt similar rules. Unlike broad competition laws, the DMA resembles industrial policy, allowing countries to either opt-out or develop alternative frameworks.”

Stakeholders in the Global South called for a more localised approach to developing competition policies rather than disproportionately relying on frameworks of the developed world, adding that while insights from these regions can be valuable, reliance on them should be minimal.

Dr. Amar Patnaik, Former Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), said, “In the past two years, a lot has happened. For instance, the Competition Amendment Act 2023 has been enacted. At times, stakeholders have mentioned that the Competition Amendment Act is well-equipped to regulate digital market concerns. On the other hand, it has also been said that the amendments may not be sufficient, and a new law is necessary. While we explore new laws for tech markets, it is worth examining whether the Competition Amendment Act can effectively address these issues of the digital markets. The Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC), in which I was a member, advocated for ex-ante legislation for combating anti-trust issues in the digital space, particularly the Big Tech. This interplay between the amendments and the Digital Competition Bill (DCB) should be looked into. Such interplay exists between the Competition Law and the Consumer Protection Act and the now enacted, Digital Data Protection Act. Time is ripe for principle-based legislations to build trust and the rules can evolve over a period of time as technology evolves.”

Rahul Rai, Partner, Axiom5, added, “India has a thriving startup ecosystem that drives our focus on promoting and protecting these businesses. In contrast, Europe lacks such an ecosystem and is focused on creating one, while America, having a robust startup environment, aims to address issues within its own market before expanding its approach. We need to consider similarly, how the priorities and experiences of the Global South countries can also be conceptualised in a similar manner.”

Panelists also discussed the necessity of considering how competition regulations in digital markets can impact consumer welfare and the growth prospects of nascent businesses. Notably, The Dialogue announced a survey-based paper examining the potential implications of India’s proposed Digital Competition Bill for business users in the country. Preliminary observations from the study note that 88.8% of business users believe that the digital services they use are important for the success of their business. Therefore, any law regulating digital services should be mindful of their significance to business users, including startups and MSMEs.

Experts agreed that going forward, any policy introduced by the Global South, generally and India specifically, should be cognizant of the country’s domestic realities and the policy’s potential implications for consumers and SMEs.

India’s Data Privacy & Sovereignty Imperative: Industry Leaders Chart a Course for AI Innovation and Digital Trust

As India emerges as a global AI frontrunner, the intricate interplay between data innovation, data sovereignty and robust privacy safeguards has become a paramount concern, especially given the rise of AI. To address this critical challenge, Data Dynamics and the Consulate General of the United States in Mumbai convened a high-level roundtable on “The Future of Data Privacy and Security in the Era of AI”.

Hosted by Consul General Mike Hankey, the event brought together a distinguished gathering of government officials and industry leaders. Sujata Saunik, Home Secretary of Maharashtra, and Yashasvi Yadav, Special Inspector General of Police, Maharashtra Cyber, lent their expertise to the discussions.

The roundtable delved into the complexities of navigating India’s data landscape, where the potential to harness data for economic growth is immense. Based on an Ericsson Mobility Report, India is set to become the world’s largest mobile data consumer by 2028, surpassing even developed nations. With average monthly data consumption projected to reach 62GB per user, India’s appetite for data will outpace those of the US, Western Europe, South Korea, and China. This surge is fuelled by exceptionally low data costs, rapid 5G expansion, and increasing smartphone affordability.

Additionally, a Nasscom-BCG report has stated that India’s AI market is expected to touch 17 billion USD by 2027. This creates an urgency for enterprises to strike a balance between data innovation, usage, accessibility and privacy, while ensuring regulatory adherence and digital trust. However, a key challenge lies in the management of this very data—given that 80% of enterprise data today is unstructured (Gartner)—which will continue to grow due to the advent of AI.

Shark Tank Featured Startup Katidhan Felicitated by Karnataka Government

Bengaluru-based Katidhan, a fast-growing tech startup working at the intersection of cleantech, agri-tech and wildlife-tech has been felicitated by Government of Karnataka at an event held recently to celebrate the winners of its ELEVATE 2023 grant program. The event was graced by dignitaries like Priyank Kharge, Hon’ble Minister of Electronics, IT BT, Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka; Siddharth Pai (3one4 Capital); Prashant Prakash (Accel Partners); Anant Narayan (Mensa Brands), among others, where the Bengaluru Innovation Report 2024 was also launched. At the ceremony, Katidhan’s founder Ayan S R was bestowed the ELEVATE 2023-24 Winner Award, along with a winner’s certificate.

Notably, Katidhan, a Shark Tank India-featured startup, had won a non-dilutive grant last year through the flagship ELEVATE program wherein the Government of Karnataka supports innovative technological startups to convert their ideas to POCs and from thereon scale-up their business models. This grant has proven to be highly beneficial for Katidhan as it continues to build its advanced technological solutions to reduce crop losses in agriculture due to wildlife attacks.

Speaking about the achievement, Ayan S R, Founder & Director, Katidhan said, “We are extremely proud and elated to have won the ELEVATE Grant Award. On this august occasion, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation towards the Government of Karnataka for this fantastic initiative – they’re now one of the only state governments in our country to provide capital support to startups without any equity dilution. “The ELEVATE grant has played a pivotal role for us at Katidhan to come out with a basic prototype of our ideas, which in turn indirectly helped us bag a deal on Shark Tank India. In fact, ELEVATE is that stepping stone over which we could climb and manifest bigger heights, and are now on track to launch the working prototype of our upcoming AI-enabled product,” added Ayan.

Notably, Katidhan was one of the top 101 startups that were awarded the ELEVATE grant in 2023, out of 15000 applicants from across Karnataka. A total of INR 60 Crore was provided to 263 startups under different programs such as ELEVATE, ELEVATE Call 2, ELEVATE Unnati and ELEVATE Amrita. ELEVATE is the brainchild of Priyank Kharge, who started it way back in 2015, and has been at the forefront of its growth, supporting over 980 startups with grant funding till date.

Earlier this year, Katidhan appeared on Shark Tank India Season 3 and successfully clinched an investment deal from OYO founder ‘Shark’ Ritesh Agarwal. The startup has grown incrementally over the last couple of years, with its innovative solutions having already reached and positively impacted around 2000 farmers across 12 Indian states as of date. Additionally, Katidhan has also established strong GTM partnerships in a bid to ensure that both its current and upcoming products are rapidly scaled across India.
